Acireale has a mythological origin: its name comes out of the legend of the young shepherd Aci who was in love with Galatea who, on her turn, was beloved by the giant Polifemo. The town has a medieval plant concentrated on the Cathedral Square with the most interesting architectures.
Unmissable for visitors: The Cathedral, St Peter Basilica and the Town Hall. Don’t miss to admire the new artistic pavement in the square.
In St Sebastian Basilica, you can find the patron saint’s statue. He’s celebrated each 20th January.
Gastronomy
Acireale is wellknown for its pastries such us zeppole (rice doughnuts with honey), cannoli, homemade ice-creams.
